BBC TV and Radio 3's Stephanie Hughes explores Beethoven's quartet op.131 with the world famous Vanbrugh String Quartet, followed by a full concert performance. Haydn's last complete quartet opens the concert.

The vanbrugh string quartet is currently entering its nineteenth concert season, they are one of Europe's most successful string quartets. As part of its work the vanbrugh string quartet has given many hundreds of recitals of some of our favourite pieces throughout the world as well as performing for established music societies they have played a significant role in the building of many new musical communities around the country.

To reach younger children, and particularly those who may not have had access to or experience of classical music, we were delighted to work with Arts & Kids, our Patron's new charity, in a programme of music workshops for primary school children in inner London. Following their workshops the children were asked to enter a composition prize for which they were asked to 'draw' a graphic musical score for a string quartet to play. All of the entries were displayed in the Royal Academy of Music throughout London String Quartet Week. An entry from each school was chosen and the project culminated on Monday 7 April 2003 with a concert performance of the chosen compositions. David Waterman, cellist and founder member of the Endellion String Quartet, alongside the vanbrugh string quartet, in a coaching session with three aspiring quartets. An appropriate start for the Week, as the world-renowned Endellion were amongst the winners of the first International Competition back in 1979! Since then, they've appeared all over the world, have recently toured Germany, and are currently in the middle of a Beethoven Quartet Cycle at the newly-refurbished concert hall in Hampstead Town Hall in London.
