London String Quartet Symposium 2008

London String Quartet Symposium, 28th - 30th March 2008

The second Symposium will be held at the Royal Academy of Music from Friday 28th - Sunday 30th March 2008.

"The greatest and most musically inspiring weekend I've had" (participant in the 2007 Symposium)

Following the success of the first London Symposium for String Quartets in 2007, LSQF will continue its pioneering work in the development of young string quartets with a second London Symposium. Up to 12 quartets will work with up to 6 tutors over three days, culminating in a performance on Sunday evening. The tutors are drawn from the highest level of international chamber music performance, and will include Andras Keller (violinist, Keller Quartet), John Largess (violist, Miro Quartet), Johannes Meissl (violinist, Artis Quartet), Christoph Richter (cellist, Heine Quartet) and Thomas Riebl (violist, former member of the Vienna String Sextet, and professor at the Mozarteum in Salzburg). All the masterclass sessions and the final performance are open to the public and admission is free.

There are a total of 12 quartet places available for the Symposium, aimed at under- and post-graduate level quartets who have not yet started on a professional career. It is anticipated that each quartet will have 1 session of up to 90' with each of the 6 tutors during the Symposium and there will be performance opportunities during the weekend apart from the final concert on Sunday evening.

The repertoire that each quartet brings should enable them to play a different movement to each tutor, and should include at least one complete quartet that they would be prepared to play in concert,

There is a registration fee of £120 per quartet, which is refundable if a place is not allocated. Tuition and bed and breakfast accommodation in London (if required) are free of charge for the players, and they will need to pay for their own travel and meals during the Symposium.

We have a small bursary fund available towards the cost of travel and meals. If you would like to apply to this fund, please attach a supporting statement to your application form, stating the funds required.

Quartets will be expected to arrive in London no later than the morning of Friday 28th March, for a briefing session before the coaching sessions start on Friday afternoon.

If you would like a quartet from your institution to be considered for this opportunity, please complete the application form (click here to download the form) and return it with your cheque no later than Friday 7th December 2007. Confirmation of a place will be sent out shortly after this date. We do urge early application, as the Symposium is sure to be oversubscribed.
