The Preliminary Rounds of the National Youth String Quartet Competition, held in conjunction with Pro Corda, during which the selected quartets will compete for places in the Final.

11.30am-3.30pm: Adventures in Music - Family Day
Join us for a fun day of musical activities, workshops and performances, aimed at children of all ages and their parents. Lunch Box performances by the Stanford Quartet at 12.15pm and 1.15pm.

7.30pm: National Youth String Quartet Competition Final
In the culmination of the Competition, the finalists compete for the first prize, following the Preliminary Rounds on April 3rd-4th. The Jury for the Competition is the Wihan Quartet. There will be further opportunities to hear the finalists in free Lunchtime Concerts and Masterclasses on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th April.

Youth Competition finalists and quartets from schools and colleges around the UK take part in Masterclasses led by Mark Messenger, Head of Strings at the Royal College of Music, Christopher Rowland, Director of Chamber Music at the Royal Northern College of Music and David Dolan, chamber music guru.

Classical Improvisation with a String Quartet

David Dolan leads this innovative workshop exploring the possibilities of chamber music playing, with a young string quartet from one of London’s conservatoires.

The Wihan Quartet from Czechoslovakia won both the First Prize and the Audience Prize at the Fifth London International String Quartet Competition in 1991. Since 1991 they have achieved an enviable reputation for their outstanding performances in concert and on CD and for their inspirational coaching of young quartets. Tonight they celebrate the 20 years since their formation as a quartet with a performance of the two great classics they played to win the 1991 Competition in London.
