Schools Outreach Project for LSQW 2005

Creative composition and movement workshops in two Newham Schools

The aim of this year's primary school outreach project was to provide creative participative workshops informing and inspiring children about the string quartet and to devise a short newly devised work for performance at the Museum of London on April 6th as part of the Adventures in Music Family Day which launched London String Quartet Week 2005 (see Adventures in Music page).

This year's project built on work done at Gallions School in 2004, and also involved Gallions ‘sister’ school, North Beckton Primary. The project was led by composer Jackie Walduck with violinist and workshop leader Alison Blunt and the Stanford String Quartet.

Jackie and Alison led creative workshops in both schools and developed a new work for performance, based on the theme of ‘The City’ to celebrate LSQW 05's focus on the City of London in 2005. The new work was performed three times at the Museum as part of a rolling programme of performances and workshop activities. The children from both schools sang Paul Ayres ‘City Bells Song’ four times during the day, and were also able to take part in some of the workshop activities during the event.

The children of North Beckton Primary School thoroughly enjoyed working with the London String Quartet Foundation. It was the first time many had seen a performance of this kind and they were instantly captivated and enthused.

Children were given the opportunity to listen to and explore various instruments and were introduced to lots of engaging musical activities. The sessions were well organised, interactive and pitched at the appropriate level. The activities were interesting, challenging and delivered with good pace. Children were encouraged to contribute ideas, get involved and praised for their efforts.

On the day of the performance the children were given the opportunity to further extend their learning by taking part in fun filled day of musical activities, workshops and performances. The children left the museum with a great sense of achievement. It was an enjoyable day for all the children and teachers involved. The event was a great success.

A big thank you from all involved.
