Adventures in Music Family Day - Wednesday 6th April 2005
On Wednesday 6th April 2005, LSQF took over the Museum of London for our Adventures in Music Family Day. Devised by Sian Davies, Education Project Director and Mark Messenger, Artistic Director of London String Quartet Week, the aim of the day was to create an educational platform to profile London String Quartet Week 2005, to design a family/school event involving hands on workshops, informal performances and activities and to provide a rolling programme of performances and workshops alongside a range of participative activities to inform and entertain.
To celebrate its connection to the City of London in 2005, the LSQF worked in collaboration with the Museum of London to provide a day of performances and workshops. The day was aimed at both families and targeted school groups.
Performances:
- Performances by the Stanford String Quartet which were also open to City workers as ‘Lunch-Box’ concerts
- Schools performance of short newly devised work with Gallions School and North Beckton School children at given intervals (see Schools Outreach page)
- City Bell Song performances at given intervals
Activities:
- Build an Instrument with Andy Jackson - participants of all ages made stringed instruments, pan pipes and horns from wood, string, tin cans and plastic piping
- String me a Line - members of the Stanford Quartet ‘played’ doodles drawn by children of all ages
- String Zoo with Tom Wei from Florian Leonhard Fine Violins with opportunities to try out violins and a cello
- Quiz and colouring activities for all
This was the first time LSQF had organised such an event, and it was a huge success, - despite the weather - well attended and enjoyed by everyone.
Visitors' comments
“The single most important thing that I will remember about today is seeing my 8 year old son who had previously said ‘Playing a musical instrument - BORING!’, taking a lot of persuading to put a violin down, and then his excitement at making an instrument.”
“Having my doodle put to music nearly made me cry.”
“This is the kind of learning we choose - freedom and choice involved.”
“It was indeed a little different from my usual working day. It was fantastic to see the children so drawn to musical instruments. I would like to congratulate you on the event and look forward to seeing you next year.”
“My 3-year old daughter and I attended the Adventures in Music day at the Museum of London in April and we had a great day. I wish I'd known about the other events during the week and will make sure that we know all about it next year. Well done to all responsible for organising it.”
