auer string quartet

The Competition, originally the brainchild of Yehudi Menuhin in 1977, is well established as the most prestigious of its kind in the world. It is held every three years and is open to any string quartet except previous London First Prizewinners. It consistently attracts entries from around the world including the USA, Europe, Japan, Russia and China. Past prizewinners include the Takacs, the Alexander, the Hagen, the Vanbrugh, the Castegneri, the Endellion, the Ysaye, the Auer string quartet and the Belcea quartets, all of whom are now highly successful.

After winning this competition the auer string quartet had this to say Our career started after we had won first prize at the 7th International String Quartet Competition in London. We had already participated at other contests before but this one was the major breakthrough. It was a memorable event for all of us.

The Auer String Quartet was started by a group of students Academy of Frank Lizst. They attended master-classes of the Amadeus Quartet in London. When they won the prestigious first prize at the Leó Weiner Competition in Budapest their careers started to take off and then a year after that they went on to take second prize at the Viotti Chamber Music Competition in Italy. Then it was 1993 and they managed to win first prize againthey won at the Evian String Quartet Competition, together with the special prize of the Press and the prize for the best Mozart interpretation. In 1996 the Hungarian Musicians Association voted them "Ensemble of the Year".

Our masterclass day for young string quartets at the Royal College of Music in 2002 was a tremendous success and one which we hope will become a regular event. Building on this idea, and enabling the public to listen in there was masterclasses throughout the Week in which aspiring young quartets were coached by leading professionals. Please see masterclasses for full details of the programme for the recent London String Quartet Week.
